The Delta , the power of nature.

South-West Netherlands was hit by an enormous
flood disaster on the night of the 1st February 1953.

On the 1st of February 1953 there was a heavy mist setting in. A few moments later there was the water ,icy water many people could only reach their houses with a great difficulty and had to remain their until they were rescued. 100000 Dutch people lost their house and home.
1836 people lost their lives during the 1953 flood disaster. A combination of a storm tide and a spring tide had pushed the water to heights unheard of in centuries. There was 200.000 hectare under the water.

 

 

facts of the Delta works:
1937 The ministry of Waterways and Plublic works concluded that there was no
adequate protection against abnormally high water levels.
1939 The stormtide commission was set up.
1940 There was a delay during the secord Word War.
1950 Brielse Maas was closed off.
1953 Storm floods on the night of 31th January and 1st Februay 1953 which ravaged the south west of the Netherlands.
1953 The dikes were closed in Ouwerkerk with caissons in november 1953.
1958 Flood barrier between Capelle and Krimpen aan den Ijssel was completed.
1960 Dam between north and south Beveland had been closed.
1961 In April North-Beveland and Walcheren were connected up to each other.
1967-1969 Secondairy dams and works were constucted ...Volkerakdam, locks in Willemstad
Hellegatsplein connected the Hoekse Waard, Goeree-Overflakkee and North-Brabant for ever.
1970 The Haringvlietdam between Voorne and Goeree was built in November.
1971 Brouwersdam between Goeree and Schouwen was completed in May.
1978 25 years after the flood disaster the Oosterschelde had to be closed off.
1986 In October the Queen of the Netherlands opens the hightech opendam technology with the world press.
1987 Oester and Philipsdam were completed.
